David Archuleta “My Only Wish” EP Review

BY KATHERINE CHUNG

David Archuleta is ready for the holiday season. His new EP “My Only Wish” is out now. These five songs are the perfect addition to your holiday playlist. This EP consists of five songs. Each track is carefully picked with nostalgia and holiday cheer in mind. Fans may recognize that two of the tracks are remastered, indicating a shift in sound following David’s hiatus. The other three tracks are new songs for which Archuleta is credited as a co-writer.

The title track, “Christmas in California,” is a re-imagining of David’s Laguna Beach vacation with his friends. In the lyrics, he reminisces about trying to convince a love interest to spend Christmas with him. Instrumentally, the song is upbeat and a wonderful jingle to listen to with people you love.

While the title track is in the middle, “Wish at The Top of My List” is a beautiful duet with his American Idol friend, Jordan Sparks. Fans may recognize her as the winner of the 2008 finale of the singing show. Adding this feature made the song nostalgic for OG Archuleta fans. In contrast, the second track, “Sleigh Ride,” kept the original song’s melody but adds a flirty, romantic twist similar to how David spiced up his fall EP Earthly Delights.

With nostalgia in mind, David remastered “Christmas Every Day” & “Winter in the Air”. Two songs that OG fans may recognize from his holiday album, which he released in 2009. These tracks feel familiar yet carry a new spark, reflecting that his songwriting has grown and matured over the past five years.

David is giving us a gift for the holidays.  There is definitely more music in the new year. For now, fans can stream the holiday music and his fall EP, “Earthly Delights.”
