Googly Eyes “Paint Me Like One of Your FAV AMERICAN Girls.” EP Review

But when you sit with the record and play all five tracks on repeat, another layer appears. As a record in collaboration with Tove Lo and Flume, it is a combination of storytelling, synth pop beats and raw weird energy put out into the world. Or it can be seen as an EP about crying, feeling everything deeply, and slowly healing.
“I Don’t Go Out” turns out to be far more layered than its title suggests. On the surface, it feels like an elaborate synth pop dance-floor anthem. The pulsing tempo and DJ-driven production sit boldly in the foreground, but the lyrics tell a different story. By the time the bridge arrives, the song becomes strikingly fierce, almost like an angry diary entry written in the quiet aftermath of a breakup.
The repetition of these words emphasizes the anger beneath the surface. The song lyrics emphasize they clearly moved past the earlier stage of denial after losing someone. Instead, it sits in that raw emotional space where denial and anger collide. The painful early stages of grieving the end of a relationship or relationship of trust.
In contrast, “Feel Like I Died” and “Made Of,” are stark female anthems. There is a moment of deep hopelessness, when it feels like trust in a relationship may never work out. But as the darkness slowly fades, a small spark appears in the background, reminding the individual that: I’m better than this. It’s time to discover what I’m made of.
Paint Me Like One of Your Fav American Girls ends with a song that means everything and nothing all at once. “EVERYWHERE,” is a reminder that that woman’s feelings and self-awareness are important even after relationships end.
