Answer: Growing up in Kansas City exposed me to a rich tapestry of musical genres. Kansas City was all about jazz, R&B, hip hop, and gospel music... When my family relocated to Seattle during my childhood, I was immersed in a completely different musical landscape. Seattle was synonymous with rock, grunge, and punk rock... 'Image Issues' is a reflection of my musical journey, blending the soulful sounds of my upbringing with the raw energy and intensity of the Seattle music scene.

Intersectionality in Music

Question: How do you think embracing intersectionality within your music has helped break down barriers, for the range of listeners who see themselves reflected in your music?

Answer: Embracing intersectionality in my music is about recognizing and celebrating the diverse identities and experiences that make up our world... Answer: Navigating the music industry as a non-binary artist comes with its own set of challenges... Being non-binary is a fundamental part of who I am, and I refuse to compromise that for anyone or anything. My music is a reflection of my experiences, including the struggles and triumphs of navigating gender identity in a society that often fails to understand or accept it.

Question: A reoccurring symbol with “Image Issues” is the sound of the treadmill and how it helps move the album along. What was it about the sounds of a treadmill that inspired you to include it on the album and use it as a symbol for your inner thoughts?

Answer: The treadmill is a powerful metaphor that runs throughout 'Image Issues,' symbolizing the relentless struggle of the mind and body... It's a symbol of the internal battles we face, the relentless pursuit of an unattainable ideal, and the toll it takes on our mental and emotional well-being.

Question: I saw in an interview you did with Spin, discussing how Image Issues is an album that emphasizes sound in the current world of social media, where music is heavily moved by visuals now over sound, what was the most rewarding aspect of creating Image Issues and how have you seen that reward since the release?

Answer: In a world where music is often consumed visually, I wanted to challenge the status quo and refocus attention on the power of sound to convey emotion and meaning... In doing so, I hoped to create a space for genuine connection and reflection, where listeners could immerse themselves in the music and find solace and understanding.
