BY DANIELA MIRELES
Marcus King, the artist behind the powerful and emotional newly released album “Mood Swings” , the record that took fans on a personal and vulnerable journey that was shared by the artist. With a blend of emotion and vulnerability, Marcus King shared his creative process, triumphs, inspirations and details of his upcoming tour at a press conference with 1824.
“Music is a powerful tool and that can help you release any kind of emotion you’re going through” says the 28 year old singer. To him, his new album pays homage to his family and other positive forces in his life that propelled him to become the best version of himself which helped in the writing of this new record, expressing how he doesn’t care about charts or awards, but rather shares that “it would drive him crazy” the thought of not being able to do music. Mental health is a strong common factor in all of his music, as it helps him express himself and release all of his bottled up emotions, he expresses love for her wife, as he looks for support in her, and seeks for validation that his feelings are real with a reassurance that they can work through feelings together.
Marcus worked on this highly critically acclaimed album in the famous Shangri-La studio in Malibu alongside famous producer Rick Rubin. He created memories and experiences that defined this album and have inspired him to evolve as an artist, sharing that he was quarantined in this studio alongside The Red Hot Chili Peppers and worked on his album on Bob Dylan’s reconfigured old tour bus . The “Mood Swings” singer shared that Rubin motivated him to dig deeper into himself, and inspired the idea of being vulnerable and letting people see his vulnerability.
The singer teased his music festival “The Family Reunion”, a two-day festival that will make its first appearance in South Carolina this summer. As he mentioned this, he also shared his excitement for his upcoming tour to start, but also talked about the fact that this album is giving him an opportunity to be present with the audience, saying, “When i play these songs live they are a reminder to be in the room with an audience and i never want to sell an audience short.” He’s excited to be able to connect with fans on tour, as the release of these songs has been a therapeutic process for him. He brought up that this album is pretty difficult to play as it carries a weight for him, highlighting the song “Cadillac” as the one that he thinks will be the most difficult to play live.
In this brand new journey, the singer has learned various things about himself and his mental health, but creatively, has also found himself in a better place. As he has faced creativity blocks while writing his album “Young Blood” saying how he felt detached from anything creative and avoiding it at all costs. But it was not until his latest release that he realised the power that music has over him and the ability it has to make him release all his inner demons and get him to a better place mentally.
“Mood Swings” is available to stream in all major streaming services, and tickets to his upcoming tour are all available on Ticketmaster.
