SAMMY RAE AND THE FRIENDS IN LA
Genevieve quinn (she/Her)
Amidst a stage adorned with foliage and tree stumps, Sammy Rae and the Friends emerged from the darkness, lamps in hand to kick off the second to last night of their North American camp themed tour. They started the night with high energy favorites “Talk It Up”, “Follow Me Like The Moon” and “Whatever We Feel” for their Los Angeles fans, lovingly named the Friends, on Wednesday night at the Novo.
Accompanied by up-and-coming alt-pop artist Victoria Canal, the night was a celebration of queerness from start to finish. It’s hard to express the safe space the Friends have created for their, primarily, LGBTIA+ fans. With anthems like “Jackie Onassis”, Sammy Rae is known for promoting individuality and acceptance through her music. The night was lively and bright. From fun themed costumes and coordinated dances, The Friends on-stage bond captivated the audience with each alternative indie tune.
Led by powerhouse vocalist Sammy Rae, the band is composed of multi talented musicians on instruments including drums, bass, guitar, keys, synth, tenor saxophone and alto saxophone. Together they delivered a jaw dropping performance of their unique sound; a blend of soul, jazz, funk, folk and classic rock. The Friends shared three unreleased songs from their first ever full length album, which is currently in production.
