Dev Lemons at Evanston SPACE
BY MARY ICENOGLE (SHE/HER)
Welcome to The Freakshow Tour with Jordana and Dev Lemons. The co-headliners’ 20-show tour began in September with stops in California, Texas, Utah, Denver, and more before finally reaching Evanston SPACE on October 18, the third-to-last stop on the tour. I first heard of Dev Lemons from her YouTube channel where her 170,000 suscribers can enjoy commentary on TikTok trends, pop-culture moments in music, and, of course, Charlie Puth. It only took a few clicks before I discovered her music and entered the world of Dev Lemon’s genre-bending alternative/R&B-ish/slightly emo/bedroom pop.
Dev Lemons took to the stage with CEO OF MY ASS, a high energy track that set the stage for the rest of her hour-long set. Accompanied only by live drums, a backing track, and plenty of puns based on fans’ names, Dev Lemons took concert goers on a journey through well-known favorites like One Whole Me and You Tear Me Apart, as well as a handful of unreleased songs, and a QUEEF JERKY encore (Dev Lemons and Nick Green, present on The Freakshow Tour as Dev’s accompanying drummer, comprise the musical group most known for their song Pineapple Upside Down). The entire show served as a showcase of the musician’s versatility and range as a live performer - from her ability to perform energetic songs with ambition and vibrancy to being able to soften and melt vocals in tracks like Nightstand and Think About It.
