Beabadoobee Takes a Bite out of Boston

BY MADDIE MAYNARD

On September 13th, 2024, singer/songwriter Beabadoobee (Bea Laus) put on a breathtaking performance at the MGM Music Hall in Boston, MA. The show was part of her “This is How Tomorrow Moves” tour, consisting of 14 shows, Boston being the fifth. This tour shortly follows the release of Bea’s third studio album “This is How Tomorrow Moves”. She describes this album as her most personal and vulnerable album yet and I one hundred percent agree.

Bea brings along two wonderful artists with her on this tour, Keni Titus and Hovvdy. Keni Titus is an American singer/songwriter, her second EP “juliet” released on September 6th, just weeks before she embarked on tour with Beabadoobee. Her setlist consisted of six songs: think i got a bad idea, take it off, sid and nancy, american spirit, just keep driving, and if u want. The second opener, Hovvdy is an Indie Pop duo from Austin, Texas consisting of members Charlie Martin and Will Taylor. Hovvdy’s setlist contained eight songs: Junior Day League, Forever, In the Sun, Cathedral, Around Again, Make Ya Proud, Jean, and True Love. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance and immediately added their music to my playlist before I drove home. Both were very lively and engaged with the crowd often.

Beabadoobee came on about 9:15pm, her intro song being “California” from her new album “This is How Tomorrow Moves”. Bea wore a beautiful magenta top with a denim mini skirt, she looked as beautiful as ever. During her hour and a half long set she played: California, Talk, 10:36, Charlie Brown, Post, Take a Bite, Sunny Day, Ever Seen, The Perfect Pair, Real Man, Glue Song, Coffee, Girl Wong, One Time, Beaches, Care, She Plays Bass, Cologne, and then Coming Home, The Way Thing Go, and See You Soon for the encore. It was such an amazing experience to see Bea live after being a fan of her music for so long, her voice is one hundred times more beautiful live than it is recorded. I’m astonished that it is even possible because she always sounds amazing. For the first third of her set, there is a sheer white backdrop along with what looks like orange trees on stage, and big overhead lights that look like plant lamps. During “Post”, the overhead lights are taken away, but the backdrop and orange trees remain. Then, during “Beaches” while Bea sings the last chorus, the backdrop falls aways to reveal beautiful and full vines which make the stage look like a garden.

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been a fan of Bea’s for quite some time now, but there were two specific moments during the show that I wanted to mention. First, during “Glue Song”, arguably one of Bea’s most popular songs, there was a group of three girls who looked to be around their early 20’s near me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the girls holding hands while spinning in a circle and truly dancing like no one was watching. It was such a heartwarming and wholesome moment to witness as I feel most people get nervous to dance at concerts, but they weren’t nervous at all and it was so beautiful I couldn’t help but smile and giggle at how cute it was. Secondly, I wanted to discuss Bea’s “Girl Song”. This song is probably the one I resonate with most off of  “This is How Tomorrow Moves”. It encapsulates the feeling of being a teenage and young adult woman so truthfully in an incredibly heartfelt song. I can truly see girls everywhere relating to this song, I know I do, and I sobbed like a baby when she played it live. Bea has captured so many people’s hearts everywhere, but her music has such a positive impact on women and that is so beautiful to me.
