Goth Babe brings funky beats to Raleigh

BY ALYSSA SCINTA

Goth Babe’s vibrant energy and wild side was not only supported by the stage design, but rather elevated. The usage of elevated platforms for each side of the stage as well as his drummer provided different places to look and other surfaces for the lighting to interact with. With constant usage of beautiful pink and cyan washes through the night, the strategic use of strip lighting on the platforms added another element of depth to the stage.

Goth Babe did not shy away from interaction from the audience. During the set, he provided an orange slice shaped floatie to one participating crowd member to crowdsurf during the duration of his song, Calista. During this segment, the crowd member ventured through the entire pit; not only did other crowd members keep her up with ease, they also helped her back up when she happened to slip during the segment.

This tour was treated to two incredible opening acts. The Aces, the primary supporting band throughout this North American tour, a female queer alternative band from Provo, Utah. The Aces’ discography includes Strategic move for Goth Babe; bringing back sounds of authentic guitar to the set that Goth Babe’s music shy’s away from, as Goth Babe’s strengths include synth and heavy beats. The Aces also provide more emotionally challenging and thought provoking themes in their lyricism to the tour. If you’re interested in music that revolves around tough relationships with religion, friendship and the true love in that, and growing up as a gay kid in a conservative area, I can’t recommend the Aces enough.

Goth Babe just began their tour, and will continue their route to Texas and California soon!
