Um, Jennifer’s? “Old Grimes” Track Review

BY KATHERINE CHUNG

Eli (he/him) and Fig (she/they) from Um, Jennifer?, are back with another whimsical, creative, and captivating single. “Old Grimes” falls directly in the center of their upcoming album. It comes with a captivating music video that fans may find themselves watching multiple times.

This track marks a shift in the Jennifer universe, whether metaphorical or physical. Fig’s opening lyrics about Grimes reference the Canadian musician from the early 2000s. A reference to the good old days or nostalgia, as we like to call it. Then, after a string of Eli’s vocals, the bass and drums fill the void of silence with passion and loud noise. Not to mention, this is the band's first time encountering Jennifer in person rather than as a voiceover. It is as if listeners have been thrown back on the edge of the void multiple times until a safe place has been reached.

To fully immerse themselves in the unique void the duo has crafted, listeners should watch the accompanying music video. Just as with the "Delancey" video, Eli once again takes the director’s chair for “Old Grimes”. The video is just as distinctive as the song, set once again in New York with Jennifer’s help. Eli and Fig’s seamless chemistry and creative vision have resulted in a visually stunning masterpiece unlike any other. Blending elements of storytelling, horror, and nostalgia for teen years, the video offers a one-of-a-kind experience.

But, wait, of course, there’s more…. Um, Jennifer? universe never stops: Their album, Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark, releases on April 25th. You can pre-save the album and pre-order the vinyl via Trans Music Archive. That night, they will also be playing their album release show at Nightclub 101 in NYC, with tickets available for purchase now.
