BY KATHERINE CHUNG (she/HER)

During the last week of September, Dean Lewis released his second single of the year called “Trust Me Mate.” This song serves as a preview of his upcoming third studio album. Dean Lewis, a pop singer-songwriter, is renowned for his emotionally charged and vulnerable music. One of his most popular songs, 'Be Alright,' garnered over 259 million views on YouTube since its release. Earlier this year, he collaborated with Julia Michaels on a song titled “In a Perfect World,” marking his first release since his second album, 'The Hardest Love.'

“Trust Me Mate” continues the tradition of Dean's poignant and heart-wrenching style that characterizes his other successful songs. It conveys a message slightly more optimistic than his hit track 'Be Alright’. The new song delves into what it means for Dean to have such an impactful support system during his most challenging moments.

In a recent Instagram video, Lewis explained that the song is dedicated to his Nan. The video offers glimpses into Dean's life before securing his record deal, including moments with his Nan, who took him in when he had nowhere else to go six years ago. It also showcases the small bedroom where he composed the song “Be Alright”, which ultimately led to his record label contract. Dean discusses his lowest points when he “felt like he was nowhere near where he wanted to be as an artist”, as well as other pivotal moments in his successful career. Ultimately, the video serves as a tribute to his grandmother, who never lost faith in him.

The music video includes a pinned comment from Dean, encouraging fans to share stories about the individuals who supported them during their darkest hours. “Trust Me Mate”' serves as a fitting conclusion to suicide prevention month and serves as a reminder to express gratitude to all those who have provided support.
