SOCCER MOMMY STUNS IN CHICAGO
BY ADI COHEN
Below freezing temperatures in Chicago did not stop the city from showing out for two sold out nights at Thalia Hall, and for good reason. Soccer Mommy’s music feels like being wrapped in a warm blanket, and this concert provided that same feeling on an amplified scale.
Lead singer, Sophie Allison’s, dreamy vocals make you feel like you’re floating. The carefully thought out lighting and stage design added to that ambiance. The blue and orange lights blended seamlessly with the nature-inspired imagery and colorful flowers arranged around the stage. Everything felt calm in the room as the crowd collectively swayed along to the subdued sounds of her voice backed by soothing guitar melodies.
Standing shoulder to shoulder in the sold-out venue was a treat. After the first three songs, I eventually landed in a spot towards the back of the venue to watch the rest of the show. Despite no longer being up close to the stage, none of the intimacy was lost.
The stripped-down nature of the music brims with emotion that could be felt across the venue. The lyrics are raw, vulnerable, and relatable. In a way, it’s almost jarring how the music itself makes you feel calm inside, while the lyrics simultaneously stir up all sorts of emotions within you. It allows Soccer Mommy to connect with the audience really effortlessly. Joking with the crowd and providing moments of levity before one song faded into the next.
I have seen Soccer Mommy once before and knew to expect a similar environment at this show. However, the addition of songs from the latest album Evergreen into the setlist, built upon those feelings. Ultimately making for a show that leaves you with a strong feeling of connection with those standing around you.
Knowing that everyone in the room is feeling the music in the same way that you are makes you feel a little less alone. Especially in times like this, where it is all too easy to feel alienated, this show provided the perfect reprieve. Thankfully, this tour has just kicked off, so if this sounds like something you need in your life, there is plenty of time to grab tickets to a show near you.
