MADI DIAZ SOLD OUT IN TORONTO
BY ARLIN
Madi Diaz is an artist that you always want to make sure you catch when she’s in town. From arenas to record stores, you can always count on her putting on a lovely performance. Diaz sold out The Axis Club in Toronto, following the release of her 6th studio album Weird Faith.
I was first introduced to Diaz’s music when she opened for Harry Styles’ Love on Tour back in 2022 at Scotiabank Arena and immediately became a fan. Later that same year I was fortunate enough to catch her performing a mini set at Toronto’s own Sonic boom Records. It’s such a unique experience to watch an artist perform in drastically different environments, no matter the venue she puts on a great show every time. The show was opened by Olivia Barton who performed a combination of released and unreleased songs, as well as a lovely cover of “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson. As her last stop on the tour, the crowd welcomed her with open arms.
Diaz hit the stage at 9pm, keeping it simple with a guitar in hand and her drummer in the background, opening the show with her song “Same Risk”. Her voice is crisp and melodic, closing her eyes as she begins to sing, and smiling as she hears the words being sung back to her. The emotions she sings about come through in her demeanour while she sings and you feel them run through the crowd. Her performance of “Obsessive thoughts” where in the chorus she shakes her head as she repeats the phrase “obsessive thoughts” is a part of the show that really sticks with me because of how raw it felt. The songs from her album History of a Feeling resonated particularly with the crowd, many shouting the lyrics as she sang. “Think Of Me” was the fan favourite of the night (a personal favourite of mine as well).
After taking a comedic jab at the classic “fake walk off stage before the inevitable encore” bit, she performed a few last songs, inviting Olivia Barton back on stage to perform one of them together. The last song of the night, and a great note to end on, was the title track “Weird Faith”. As the show came to an end, she stood in front of the cheering crowd with her hand on her heart and a big smile on her face. It was touching to see how much she was appreciating the people that showed out for her. She thanked the crowd again and again as she made her way off stage.
Madi Diaz will be continuing The Weird Faith Tour through North America until early April. Tickets can be purchased on www.madidiaz.com
