DIY PROM WITH CINEMA STARE

BY HOLLY VAN NESS

As a 2020 high school senior, I never went to prom. So when Cinema Stare invited Out Jamz out to DIY Prom–a music event hosted by Head Above Water Collective and Save The Cat touring–I was very excited. I pulled out my fanciest little black dress, slapped on my Doc Martens, and took my camera to prom.

“Dressing to impress” was encouraged so most people wore dresses and tuxedos and someone was even giving out corsages to really set the scene. The theme of DIY prom was underwater/under the sea and the stage was decorated with a shiny tinsel curtain, seafoam-inspired balloons, and sharks hanging from the ceiling. There were 6 bands on the bill and everyone had a merch table in the back of the room. I had the chance to meet a couple of the bands and snap some funny prom-esc portraits.

Wave Break started the party with some of their iconic songs and the rest was history. Frakenroll, a custom eggroll chef, had a table where they were selling dessert egg rolls. And by the end of the night, the balloon arches had been thrown into the crowd as everyone finished by dancing and singing to the headlining band, Afloat.

Thank you to Cinema Stare for having Out Jamz out!
