Camping Under the Stars: Sammy Rae & The Friends Shine at The Strand Theater
BY KENZIE MAGAN (HE/HIM)
Sammy Rae & The Friends made their way to the historic Strand theater in Providence, Rhode Island for their “Camp” tour on February 12th. They brought along Philly native Julia Pratt to open the show. With highly impressive vocals and an adorable demeanor, Pratt quickly won over the crowd and had them hyped for the 8-man headliners to come.
The Friends came out to a set decorated like an 80’s summer camp, carrying small lanterns to their respective spots on stage. Sammy Rae entered last, clad in a scout uniform and filling the stage with her infectious happy energy. The one thing I love about this band is their fun-loving attitude. Every show of theirs is like being embraced in a warm hug. The band clearly has immense respect and rapport with each other, constantly interacting and hyping each other up as the night goes on.
The night started with “Talk It Up” and immediately Sammy Rae’s powerful vocals captured the audience’s attention. Her voice resembles a fusion of rock and soul and is incredibly unique to the Connecticut native. The crowd was extensively thrilled when she announced their new album coming this year, as their current portfolio consists mainly of singles and EPs. Overall, this show is an absolute bundle of joy and a must-see for all indie fans.
