BLU DETIGER AT WEBSTER HALL NYC
BY LIAM GILLIN (HE/HIM)
This past Saturday, I was invited to attend Blu DeTiger’s last show of her tour: Blu DeTour. I had heard of her hit “Figure It Out” that had gone viral on TikTok during quarantine a few years ago and was very excited heading to Webster Hall to see her live. The show began with openers Tiffany Day and JDM Global. Openers can always tell you everything you need to know about the main act. Tiffany and JDM Global set the scene for Blu DeTiger’s performance; the chill, indie vibes audiences are craving nowadays.
The crowd was enthusiastic and calm, just a good group of people of all shapes and sizes ready to vibe with Blu DeTiger. She performed hits such as “Cotton Candy Lemonade,” “Blutooth,” “Tangerine.” Blu DeTiger had such a powerful stage presence where in the moment it did not feel like you were in a theater the size of Webster Hall but a concert hall much bigger. Her style of music, her aesthetic, Blu DeTiger is someone who knows how to put on a show.
I had also learned that she is the same age as me. What I love about seeing artist’s my age is seeing how they have been influenced by the music we grew up on and implementing that nostalgia for a new young audience. For example, when she performed her newest single “Elevator” from the beat of the drum to that rhythmic bass, it took me back to the early 2000s.
One of my favorite parts of the show was when Blu DeTiger covered Taylor Swift just to have it seamlessly transition to Fergie and then again to MGMT. We also cannot forget the chemistry she has with the bass. If I can describe her bass playing in one word: it would be that it was incredible. Blu DeTiger clearly has an infatuation with her bass that carries not only her music but her shows.
After leaving the show all I could think was thank god TikTok exists. As a result of the social media platform, the world has been able to discover new artists just from scrolling aimlessly on the For You Page. Blu DeTiger is an artist that is only getting bigger from here and I am excited to see where she goes next.
