ALEXA CAPPELLI AT MERCURY LOUNGE NYC

BY LIAM GILLIN (HE/HIM)

Alexa Cappelli thrived at her first New York show at the Mercury Lounge on Tuesday January 10 as a part of  the School Night lineup for It’s A School Night. Included in the lineup was Mei Semones, Shane Guerrette, and Rachel Crae. With over 700,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, Alexa Cappelli is a pop star on the rise. The singer/songwriter is known for her songs such as “Could’ve Just Left Me Alone,” “Temporary,” and “Lose, Lose.

If Alexa’s performance could be described in one word it would have to be intimate. Accompanied by Producer and Songwriter Zeph Park on guitar, Cappelli was able to successfully unite the audience as one. As she progressed in her set, I felt the room get warmer. I saw people collectively move themselves closer and closer to the stage as she performed each song. One aspect of the performance that was enjoyable was when she covered “She’s So Gone” from the hit musical film, Lemonade Mouth. Incorporating nostalgia into a musical performance is always enjoyable.

New York shows are a whole different ball game. For a lot of artists whether they are small or the biggest name in the world, performing in New York is the ultimate privilege. For a lot of them, it is their “I made it” moment. It’s a new stage in their music careers. Through her combination of captivating music and stage presence, she flourished in her performance.

As we enter the new year, it is safe to say that Alexa Cappelli has a lot of great things in store for her career in 2023. Her performance at the Mercury Lounge was just the beginning for this new stage in her career as she takes on the East Coast and her live performances get better and better.
