Um, Jennifer?’s “Delancey” Track Review and Album Release Date

BY KATHERINE CHUNG

At a time when LGBTQ+ rights often feel disregarded as human rights, music remains a powerful way to amplify our voices and stories. Um, Jennifer? is a band dedicated to uplifting and celebrating the queer community through their music. Most recently, they have released their latest single “Delancey”. This release marks one of the first exciting announcements from Eli (he/him) and Fig (she/they) this year. New and old fans can look forward to even more quirkiness, fun, and whimsical storytelling in the months ahead.

Eli Scarpati, one-half of the New York City-based duo, describes "Delancey" as: “[a song] written from two perspectives at once - your own disappointment with the one you love, and from the fear that they’re disappointed in you too. It’s speaking aloud the anxious spiral that unrequited love creates.” He explains that the song is about feeling insecure in a romantic relationship and worrying that your partner is unhappy with your choices. It is a universal fear, whether a relationship is serious, platonic, or just a fling. We often see this fear reflected in book characters, mirroring our own experiences and emotions.

Lyrically, the song captures two distinct emotions: insecurity and anxiety. While often related, they are not the same. The lyrics reflect this contrast with lines like, “Do you think I talk too much?” and “You talk way too much.” These phrases mirror the self-doubt and overanalysis that can arise during a date night, as partners navigate their interactions with uncertainty.

Besides his musical contributions, Eli also directed the song’s music video, which follows him and Fig strolling through the streets of Manhattan. If a listener had to pick just one song to keep forever, this would be a top contender—not for its lyrics, but for its irresistibly catchy beat. It’s the kind of track that finds you when you need to clear your head after a night out with your partner, the one you hear in passing and can’t help but dance to. Fittingly, the video was filmed on Delancey Street in Manhattan, NY—a name that feels almost poetic in this context.

Currently, fans of the duo should keep their eyes open because there are scenes in the video related to the universe they created themselves. New fans should be hitting the follow button on the duo’s social media so that they can stay updated on what’s to come in the Um Jennifer? Universe. You never know what whimsical surprises Eli and Fig have up their sleeves.

But wait…there’s more music coming to your daily streaming services. Um, Jennifer? have announced their highly-anticipated full-length debut album! Fans need to get prepared for even more fun, storytelling, and whimsical visuals. Um Comma Jennifer Question Mark, is due for release on April 25, 2025, on Final Girl Records and is going to blow listeners' minds away.

You can listen to “Delancey” on all streaming platforms now.
