THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT PART 1 REVIEW
BY Amani Salahudeen
The Tortured Poets Department is an album every Swiftie’s highly anticipated album came out at 12 AM on Friday, April 19th. This is Taylor Swift’s 11th studio album. As one of Out Jamz’s resident Swifties this album is the album I didn’t know I needed. This album is perfect for anyone who’s single, going through a broken heart, or just wants to be in their feels. Welcome to The Tortured Poets Department … are you ready for the album review?
Fortnight (feat). Post Malone most memorable line is: “I love you, it’s ruining my life,” Fortnight is a compelling opener for this album. Post Malone was a pleasant surprise collab on the album. The music video was released at 8pm on Friday, April 19th, 2024.
My favorite song on the album is The Tortured Poets Department (TTPD), So Long London, & But, Daddy, I Love Him. The lines that are catchy from TTPD is: “Sometimes I wonder if you're gonna screw this up with me/But you told Lucy you'd kill yourself if I ever leave:And I had said that to Jack about you so I felt seen/.” One of the best lines from So Long London (which everyone knows is about Joe as it’s basically a sequel to London Boy which is also about Joe Alywn) is: “I died on the altar waiting for the proof/You sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days/And I'm just getting color back into my face/I'm just mad as hell 'cause I loved this place for!” But, Daddy, I Love Him was a song I initially speculated would be an ode to The Little Mermaid. This song is very upbeat and catchy but has some of the most gut wrenching lines in a song. It states: “I'll tell you something 'bout my good name/It’s mine alone to disgrace/I don't cater to all these vipers dressed in empath's clothing.” This song shows how in denial Swift was about her relationship at the time.
Florida (Feat. Florence & The Machine) is incredibly upbeat and follows the same beat as But, Daddy I Love Him. Fresh out of the Slammer is edgier and resembles a bit of the Reputation album era. Down Bad has both Reputation and Lover vibes. It’s a very touching song.
Guilty as sin?, loml, & I Can Do It With a Broken Heart are some of her more vulnerable tracks.Guilty is rumored to be about Matty Healy. Loml is one of the most touching songs on the album. I Can Do It With a Broken Heart is incredibly pop and upbeat.
Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner- two people famous for producing and writing songs with Swift also worked on The Tortured Poets Department songs My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys & Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me? The lyrics from My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys that stood out are: “I'm queen of sand castles he destroys, oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
'Cause it fit too right, puzzle pieces in the dead of the night.” (Via Genius). In the song, Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me the lines that resonated with me was: “I’m always drunk on my own tears, isn’t that what they all said?/That I’ll sue you if you step on my lawn.”
The last three tracks from the album that will be mentioned is: The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, The Alchemy, & Clara Bow. The songs are so catchy and makes you want to sing along almost instantly. The Tortured Poets Department and TTPD: The Anthology are albums that will leave fans in their feels. We’re in our tortured poets era!
Note: Part 2 of this review will include The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.
