TATE MCCRAE “THINK LATER” REVIEW

BY KATHERINE CHUNG

Tate McRae's second album, "Think Later," released on December 8, 2023, has been a dream come true for the artist. The 14-track collection delves into themes of heartbreak, revenge, pain, emotions, and guilt, with hits like "Greedy" and "Exes" gaining popularity on radio and fan playlists.

Tate, initially known for her award-winning dance background on shows like So You Think You Can Dance, transitioned to singing in her teen years. Discovered by RCA Records through YouTube and TikTok, she released two EPs from 2017 to 2020, showcasing her evolution in both singing and songwriting.

The leading track, "Cut My Hair," encapsulates the album's essence, expressing Tate's transformation in response to her ex. At the end of the bridge, we learn that she is acting this way because she “heard he got a new girl,/ that ain't fair (Ain't fair)”. This song narrates her journey through loss, revenge, and anger, unveiling deeper emotions in subsequent tracks.

In an interview on Q With Tom Power's YouTube Channel, Tate revealed that her SNL performance of "Grave" reflects her recent year-long relationship. She acknowledged being obsessed but realized in the studio that there was no turning back, leading to a mix of guilt, anger, and relief post-breakup. In the studio, she realized, that “You can only take something so far till there’s literally no point in return anymore and that I could only push herself to certain points in our relationship. And there’s no point saving it.” In essence, this song captures her journey through feelings of guilt, anger, and relief after ending a relationship she once believed could fulfill her desires.

“Think Later" offers a musical remedy for fans dealing with breakups, seeking revenge on their ex-partners, or grappling with guilt in relationships that no longer fulfill them. All of Tate's music videos feature intricate choreography performed by the artist herself. Look forward to catching her on her second headlining international tour next year.
