Karol G’s New Music Video Celebrates LGBTQ+ Love

BY DANI MIRELES

Karol G is a Colombian reggaeton singer who recently won the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year and the Grammy for Best Musica Urbana for her most recent album “Mañana Sera Bonito ''. She has been gaining popularity over the last few years and has been a superstar among the latin american public ever since the release of her song “Tusa” featuring Nicki Minaj. Most recently, she has been selling out stadiums in the US and Latin America for her most recent and critically acclaimed tour “Mañana Será Bonito Tour.”

Just a few weeks ago, she announced the release of her song “Contigo'' in the middle of her sold out stadium show in Mexico City. She couldn’t resist the excitement she felt when she saw her fans screaming the lyrics of her songs and holding up signs that said “No quiero vida, si no es contigo” which means “I don’t want a life if it isn’t with you.'' The following week, on Valentine’s day, the Colombian hit maker released the music video for this track which features a surprise appearance from LGBTQ+ icon, Young Miko. This isn’t the first time this pair has linked up to work together, as Miko is featured in the Grammy winning album in another separate track.

The song “contigo” samples Leona Lewis’ hit “Bleeding Love” transforming this dark love song into a funbeat song.  Karol G talks about having a special someone in her life and how much happier she is with that person, becoming a better version of herself, and the thought of ever losing this person makes her emotional. With this emotional and heartfelt message, this track is definitely a song that gets people to dance around and have fun with the people that they love the most.

In the YouTube premiere, she mentioned that she thinks of this music video as a “gift for her fans” as she mentions how special this song has become for her. The music video follows the story of two women falling in love, separating and then getting to reconnect with each other after time. We see them at an apartment, where most of the falling in love took place. These scenes look like the scenes of a romance movie where both of the characters are so deeply in love you are jealous of that relationship. However, midway through the video, we see a goodbye from Karol G and Young Miko, which is followed by Young Miko giving her a heart locket that says “I hope it’s both of us at the end.” We see them yearning for each other, until the end of the video where they both meet each other in a club, and they both approach to dance with one another, rekindling their relationship.

Young Miko’s participation with the famous Colombian singer was a surprise for fans, and without any vocals, she helps intensify and help us viewers understand the intensity of love and complicity that was seen in the music video. Karol G says the main goal for this video clip was to spread the message of love and of acceptance, supporting those who have to fight against their own fears and follow their hearts to embrace their own selves and their love. The singer says she feels like she has a responsibility to promote diversity and acceptance in the latin music industry because of the large LGBTQ+ fans that support her. She also mentions that this music video and song was a “hug to the heart for those who have ever felt a fear of loving someone”. Young Miko also commented on her participation demonstrating how important this project was for her saying, “My 13 year old self would watch this video with sparkles in her eyes and with a lot of love” as she had to leave her hometown, Añascos, to find a better place for her musical dreams and to be accepted for who she is.

The message of this music video that the Grammy winning singer is trying to spread, showcase authenticity and pride as the singer inspires audiences to embrace diversity and stand up for those who have ever been afraid of being in love with someone because of who they identify as. As views keep growing, it helps audiences embrace a more inclusive view and help them understand love has no bounds, and even invites them to celebrate love  in all of its forms.

“Contigo'' helps us remind ourselves how music has the power to unite people and how transformative the power of music truly is. This music video is a triumph of representation and helps pave the way for more inclusion in the world. Thanks to their incredible portrayal of a lesbian couple, they help us celebrate love in all of its forms and empower LGBTQ+ fans to live free from social boundaries and challenges. If you have the chance to check out this track and video, I highly suggest you do.
