BY Amani Salahudeen (SHE/HER)
It’s a new soundtrack I could dance to this beat forevermore! 1989 (Taylor’s Version) was officially released on Friday, October 27th, 2023. 2014’s 1989 was incredible, but 1989 ( Taylor’s Version) will never go out of style. 1989 TV is the perfect album to listen to at a party because of how upbeat it is. The producers on this album are: Jack Antonoff, Max Martin, and Imogen Heap. Taylor’s birth year and album is treasured by every diehard Swiftie. After all, it is essentially a love letter to New York City, Taylor’s friends, her love life, and how she found herself. Most importantly, it celebrates Taylor. While it was fun to hear the old soundtrack on the album, let’s focus on the vault tracks. The vault songs listed will not be in order of the soundtrack - just in order of preference. The most talked about one is Now That We Don’t Talk which is rumored to be about Harry Styles when he was about eighteen.
The lyrics that hit home are: “You grew your hair long/ You got new icons/And from the outside/It looks like you're tryin' lives on/ I miss the old ways/ You didn't have to change/But I guess I don't have a say/Now that we don't talk.I call my mom, she said that it was for the best/ Remind myself, the morе I gave, you'd want me less/ I cannot bе your friend, so I pay the price of what I lost/ And what it cost, now that we don't talk.” Considering Styles and Swift seem to be on good terms today it is safe to say that there is no bad blood between these two. After all, this all occurred when they were both young.
The next vault song that is important is the song: Slut! This is the second song of Swift’s that has an exclamation point at the end. The following lyrics are captivating : “But if I’m all dressed up/ They might as well be lookin' at us/ And if they call me a slut/You know it might be worth it for once/And if I'm gonna be drunk/Might as well be drunk in love.” Slut! Is the perfect song to sing in the car or listen to with friends.
Another vault song is : Is it Over Now? The lyrics “Whеn you lost control (Uh-huh)/Red blood, white snow (Uh-huh)/Blue dress on a boat (Uh-huh)/Your new girl is my clone” seems to tell all about Swift’s brief romance with Styles. In the old album, fans barely got any details on their relationship. Many fans on TikTok speculate that this song feels like when a kid is finally old enough to learn the truth about why Mom and Dad split up. Harry, I Knew You Were Trouble! Fans speculate that the word flight is an easter egg for the paper airplane necklace gifted to Swift during their whirlwind romance.
Furthermore, the next vault song is: Say Don’t Go. Say Don’t Go is said to be about either her ex Conor Kennedy or Harry Styles. The lyrics are: “I'm standin' on the sidewalk alone/I wait for you to drive by/ I'm tryna see the cards that you won't show/I'm about to fold unless you.” This song is heartbreaking and a slower beat than the other songs on the album. The song is relatable for anyone who was in a relationship that ended abruptly; leaving the individual confused as they try to comprehend what happened. The individual is also left wondering how to move on.
The final vault track is: Suburban Legends. The lyrics that caught a fan’s attention are : “I didn't come here to make friends/We were born to be suburban legends/When you hold me, it holds me together/And you kiss me in a way that's gonna screw me up forever.” It is about two star-crossed lovers who make it big after leaving their small town behind. It is co-written with Jack Antonoff. To sum it up, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is even better than our wildest dreams could have imagined it to be. The fans are older now and like any true love, it’s another Taylor’s Version re-recording that swiftly became a fan’s favorite.
