Obai on Authenticity, Staying Grounded, and Universes

BY KATHERINE CHUNG (SHE/HER)

Obai, a Gen Z musician, prioritizes authenticity and crafts a unique musical universe through storytelling. In a recent 1824 press conference, the Sudanese singer expressed his belief in making music for personal satisfaction, aiming to transport listeners to new universes with each story. His latest winter release, 'Dancefloor,' is an exceptional R&B and Soul track that hints at his hometown with an easter egg, featuring Arizona creatives and friends in the music video.

Notably, his debut single 'The River' gained popularity after being featured in Grey's Anatomy Season 19, Episode 8. When inquired about the ideal TV show or movie for 'Dancefloor' to be showcased in, he playfully tapped into his inner child, suggesting,  “Spiderman, no lol. Perhaps a Pixar movie. How about Toy Story 7?"

Obai’s debut EP, 'Svnteen,' blending R&B with childhood musical influences like Frank Ocean and 90s pop, is out now on all streaming platforms. The songs narrate stories from various universes. 'Journals,' his favorite, is a heartfelt ode to his mom, resonating with supporters and deemed one of his most personal career songs, speaking directly to the heart.

“It’s been a beautiful ride. It’s just the introduction. I’m so excited to get music out. I’ve been doing a lot of shows and can’t wait to play the new music for fans,” Obai said about his journey to the completion of the EP. He shared that the songs were written all over the place: in his bedroom, in a studio in Miami, and Atlanta with Tricky Stewart. When asked about how his creations differ from other artists’ he said “I constantly create. I just constantly do stuff on the mic, even a melody. I listen to more and gain inspiration from everything. I like to take walks. Sometimes I don’t even listen to new music.”

At 18, Obai brings his mom and creative director best friend, whom he met in 6th grade, everywhere. His mom is his biggest supporter. Recognizing the challenges of being an artist, he emphasized the importance of a strong team. In the past, he reached out to bloggers and sponsors with his email, admitting he had no clue what he was doing. He felt like a kid aspiring to be noticed by major brands or blogs without knowing how to craft an email.

‘Svnteen’ is not only about Arizona, it is also a story about how his view of his parent’s Sudanese identity has changed as he gets older. “The war is going on in Sudan. It’s cool that I get to be that person to them. I’m blessed to be that person to them. I want to do a lot more with my words.” Obai draws inspiration from his parents' resilience and courage, aspiring to emulate their strength and positive impact on himself and his siblings as he grows older.

Obai knows exactly what he wants - understanding that everyone's journey is unique. Since his debut with 'No More' in the summer of 2021, he has seen significant growth. With an upcoming EP release, he aims to delve into more experimental sounds, explore a broader universe, and create even more dynamic music videos. Young and carefree, Obai is on a journey of self-discovery as an artist. His ultimate goals include performing at Madison Square Garden and potentially embarking on a national tour. Listen to the magic of Obai’s universes in 'Svnteen' available now! Stay tuned to his social media channels for exclusive content, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and exciting updates.
