BILLIE MARTEN’S upcoming RECORD “DROP CHERRIES”

BY LIAM GILLIN (HE/HIM)

“You know what is good and you must follow your that instinct.” On April 7, singer-songwriter Billie Marten will be releasing her fourth record “Drop Cherries,” a collection of songs that reflect the purity of the theme of love and finding a way to make it different. The love interpreted on this record are anticipated to be on the basis of what Marten has witness in the journey of love and what her heart has felt in the past.

Her favorite way to describe her music as “ethereal grunge and whimsical” which all comes from the tone and lyrical impact. Lyricism is one of Billie Marten’s greatest strengths in her creative musical endeavors. What drives the impactful lyricism in her songwriting is her enjoyment of creating music that is communal; what people want, what they have, and what will they experience in regards to love. The upcoming lyricism on the record is heavily supported by imagery.

Billie Marten is able to have her visuals compliment her music. When asked about the process of producing her music videos, she expressed that for her it was about scrapping out what the traditional definition of a music video was and focus on just documenting the experience of producing the song.

Another example of Billie Marten’s creativity in her music being outside of the box is going old school with how her music is being recorded. “Drop Cherries” was entirely recorded on tape. In the current age of all things digital, recording music can be complicated with all the mixing options one may have and their disposal. Recording on tape gave Billie Marten the ability to bring more authenticity and a home like feel to her sound.

Staying true to yourself is the goal for many singers out there. When the music industry is constantly evolving with new trends, remixing old samples, etc. It can be easy to lose a part of one self when trying to stay relevant. Billie Marten made it important to note that at the end of the day, the singer will always know what is good and what makes their music what it is.
