YOUNG THE GIANT AT THE ROOFTOP AT PIER 17
BY LIAM GILLIN (He/Him)
On a surprisingly cold June night at The Rooftop at Pier 17, Young the Giant was not afraid to bring out the heat. The band made waves in the early 2010s with their indie rock style and were now here to share new music and perform songs that made them a staple in the alternative genre.
Young The Giant was set to perform on June 3 for their two night run this weekend in New York City as a part of the YTG Summer 2023. Kicking off the night began with the bands Talk and Milky Chance. Talk brought on the early charm that would become the magical night ahead. The main highlight for Talk was when they covered School of Rock. Milky Chance then came on next with an epic performance as they played played “Stolen Dance” and “Living in a Haze.”
As dawn slowly turned into dusk, Young The Giant kicked off the night with the recent release “American Bollywood.” The slow haze and the dimming of blue lights let audiences know that the band would start the night slow and end with a bang. The wind blew through the crowd adding to the epic performance. Lead singer Sameer Gadhia swayed as he played the tambourine. Once “My Way” was completed, it was now time for the show to bring on the heat.
The mostly millennial crowd had a great time as they danced to songs such as “It’s About Time” and “Apartment.” The encore provided audiences with an unreleased song called “Metropolis” but this did not mean the night was over just yet as they performed three more songs before the big finish. Ending with one of the songs that put Young The Giant on the map a decade ago. The build up of the bass, the high pitched melodic guitar riff, and the pounding the drums as Sameer Gadhia began to sing “My Body.”
They performed the hit as if it came out yesterday. The crowd jumped in unison to the chorus and chanted along with the band. The orange lights flashing on every riff, the full moon and stars now casted upon the Rooftop at Pier 17; perfectly ending the night. The band will be performing all over North America for the rest of the summer. Tickets can be purchased for the tour on their website.
