Malcom todd at danforth music hall

BY ARLIN

Malcolm Todd played his first headlining show in Toronto for his Wholesome Rockstar Tour, and the name speaks for itself. The Danforth Music Hall was filled from front to back with a line wrapping all around the venue as fans made their way in.

This tour follows the release of his self titled album Malcolm Todd featuring songs you wouldn’t be able to miss including “Bleed (feat. Omar Apollo)”, “Chest Pain (I Love)”, and “Make Me a Better Man” (though it’s hard to pick favourites I must admit this is mine). The show opened with a DJ set by producer Sophie Gray, playing club hits and throwbacks (a special mention to her incredible mix of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”).

Todd took to the stage with his song “Harry Styles”, the post-ironic opening track on his new album, setting an emotional tone and making you giggle a bit. It’s genuine, self-aware, and is a fun set-up for the rest of the show. His vocals are smooth and dreamy with a bit of edge,  effectively mixing indie pop and R&B to create a sound reminiscent of Dominic Fike, Steve Lacy, and Omar Apollo (artists he has noted as inspirations) yet distinctly his. He played some of his aforementioned most popular tracks including “Bleed” and “Chest Pain (I Love)” as well as some tracks from his album Sweet Boy like “4Me 4Me”, “Earrings” and an acoustic version of “Art House”. He mentions during the show that his bandmates also happen to be his best friends, and it absolutely shows. There is a unique energy that the crowd feeds off of and the band in turn does as well. They even all came together to sing a stripped down version of “Our House” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young towards the end of the show.

Malcolm Todd is the wholesome rockstar you don’t want to miss. His tour continues through to mid June, tickets can be picked up at malcolmtodd.cool
