FIJI BLUE AT BEAT KITCHEN
BY ANNABEL BANKS
This year for Galentine's Day, I had a night well spent at Beat Kitchen with Fiji Blue and Better Love. An intimate space, Beat Kitchen hosted Fiji Blue nearly two years ago for his last show in the windy city. I made sure to arrive as punctually as I could, considering the fact that I had to leave my night class on the south (ish) side early - sorry professor!
Better Love, a Chicago based trio, got the crowd warmed up with their moody melodies and vulnerable lyricism. With singers/guitarists Brad and Jackie, and Kay on the drums, this queer indie rock alternative pop group rocked the stage.
Fiji Blue took the stage and quickly warmed up the crowd on this frigid Chicago winter night. Fiji Blue postponed his tour, but the show was well worth the wait. The energy in the room was nothing but positive, with fans from the very front to the back jamming to all his music, new and old. I loved learning the meaning behind June, a song off his new album, Glide. He explained to the crowd that he and his wife have a habit of preemptively naming things, like their future daughter June. As a long time fan of Fiji Blue, I was overjoyed to hear songs like Waves and Butterflies, and even more excited for an encore of three extra songs, one of which was Beautiful, one of my girlfriend and I’s favorite songs. If you have the chance to see Fiji Blue in a city near you, don’t pass up on the opportunity!
